British musician Yola puts herself in the ranks of the US soul queens of the 70s. She distils the classic qualities of the genre and brushes it up with her powerful voice. Even her 2019 debut album, “Walk Through Fire”, with producer Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, stirred the roots spirits so compellingly that it was nominated for four Grammys. Yola’s strong folk sensibilities clearly set her apart from the neo-soul of Amy Winehouse or Adele. Live, she casually sings about the old south of the USA with acoustic accompaniment, but on her current record “Stand For myself” she also makes a connection to her past as a singer for Massive Attack. In the video for the title track, she poses on a motorcycle. We would have loved her even without this confession …
